About Thomas Mulcair
Thomas Mulcair was elected leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of Canada's New Democrats on March 24th, 2012 with 57.2 % of the vote.
He was born in Ottawa, but was raised in Laval, North of Montreal. He is the second oldest of ten children.
A lawyer by trade, Thomas Mulcair worked at the Legislative Affairs branch of the Justice Ministry, and later in the Legal Affairs Directorate of the Conseil de la langue française. At the end of 1987, Tom was named President of the Quebec Professions Board (Office des professions du Québec), a position he held until 1993.
He was first elected to Quebec National Assembly in 1994, as MNA for Chomedey. He was reelected three times. During his career in provincial politics, Thomas Mulcair served as critic for Justice and for Industry, as well as Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks.
In 2007 Thomas Mulcair accepted Jack Layton’s invitation to become his Quebec lieutenant. They were both convinced that the NDP represented the values of Quebec. Thomas Mulcair went on to become the first NDP MP in the province of Quebec to be elected in a general election. He was first elected as the MP for Outrement in the 2007 by-election, and re-elected in 2008 and 2011.
Along with the strong NDP team, Jack Layton and Thomas Mulcair worked tirelessly and helped to create a spectacular breakthrough in Quebec on May 2, 2011 - making Canada's New Democrats the Official Opposition for the first time in history.

Their Final Despicable Act,
McGuinty Liberals’ Political Games
June 2, 2011
Queen’s Park – Yesterday, in what can only be called a callous, uncaring, politically motivated move, the McGuinty Liberals ended this session of Parliament one day early.
“The only business scheduled for June 2nd was the 2nd Reading of two Private Members’ Bills – one for Conservative Member Jerry Ouellette and my Bill 200, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day Act, 2011” said Miller.
Bill 200 would recognise October 15th in each year as Infant Loss Awareness Day and would have ensured this recognition this year, when the Legislature will not be back in session after the fall election. To make such a significant move as to end this session of Parliament one day early, does nothing but show Ontarians the total disregard in which this government holds them.
The Government House Leader, on whose direction this action would have been taken, has no worries about the impact in her Riding as she has announced that she will not seek re-election. “I can’t imagine why she would want this as the final act of her political life, but these mean spirited, unkind, unrepresentative and undemocratic actions are the hallmark of this McGuinty Government”, said a disgusted Miller.
So nothing but partisan games right to end and who loses – all Ontarians.

Thank You!
Yesterday, millions of voters chose change. And they put their trust in New Democrats to deliver that change.
So today, I just want to say thank you. Your support, energy and trust are what gave this campaign so much momentum.
Now, the real work starts. Today, your team of New Democrats and I will roll up our sleeves and get down to work – to fix Ottawa, and give your family a break. It’s time to turn this momentum into action – and start building the Canada we want. A Canada where families come first, and no one is left behind.
